Potatoes for dinner? Choose wisely!

15th May 2015 - 3 minutes read

I grew up on potatoes, and even now I absolutely love them! How shocking is it to find out that the humble non-organic potato carries more pesticides by weight than any other fruit or vegetable…

One of the most common reasons to eat organic produce is to avoid the harmful chemicals used in growing your food. Every consumer has the right to know which fruit and vegetables have the highest amounts of pesticides. Therefore, The Environmental Working Group (EWG) annually releases its list of the most pesticide-contaminated produce called The Dirty Dozen.

The EWG Dirty Dozen for 2015 includes:

  • apples
  • peaches
  • nectarines
  • strawberries
  • grapes
  • celery
  • spinach
  • sweet bell peppers
  • cucumbers
  • cherry tomatoes
  • imported snap peas
  • potatoes

They EWG has also expanded the list to kale, collard greens and hot peppers that contain trace levels of toxic pesticide.

Each of these foods tested positive for a number of different pesticide residues and showed higher concentrations of pesticides than other produce items.

  • 99% of apple samples, 98% of peaches, and 97% of nectarines tested positive for at least one pesticide residue
  • The average potato had more pesticides by weight than any other produce
  • A single grape sample and a sweet bell pepper sample contained 15 pesticides
  • Single samples of cherry tomatoes, nectarines, peaches, imported snap peas and strawberries showed 13 different pesticides apiece

So which fruit and vegetables are safe to eat (The EWG called them The Clean Fifteen)?

The cleanest of all vegetables is the avocado. Closely followed by sweetcorn, pineapples, cabbage, frozen sweet peas, onions, asparagus, mangoes, papayas, kiwis, eggplant, grapefruit, cantaloupe, cauliflower and sweet potatoes.

So is it going to a potato for your dinner tonight? Choose wisely, choose organic……
